Week 1- The Start of Something New
Starting My Learning Journey as an Interior Design Student at Torrens University
Knowledge Gained
This week, i dove into some of the core foundations of becoming a successful university student. I learned about the importance of starting strong, adopting a growth mindset, and the value of reflective practice in both academic and personal development, i've realised this learning journey will not only be about growing as a student but also as a person.
Challenges
The biggest challenge for me was adjusting to the new rhythm of study life while juggling being a mum. It has felt a little overwhelming this week, especially managing my time and navigating the new platforms. But learning about productive study habits, avoiding procrastination, and creating a well being strategy gave me tools to stay on track. I also reminded myself to embrace the uncomfortable, knowing that it's a space where growth happens.
Successes & Strengths
I completed all the activities and modules with more ease then i expected. This gave me a real sense of direction and a sense of confidence that i can do this.
A strength i noticed in myself this week was self awareness, i reflected deeply on what i needed to succeed and took proactive steps to set up a structured study routine.
Application
Already, I'm applying time management strategies and goal setting. I've also started using reflective thinking as part of my daily study journaling. These skills are also helping me feel more grounded and confident in this new chapter of life.
Areas for Improvement
I want to become more confident with digital tools, especially Canva, Adobe and CAD.
I also need to work on procrastination, managing distractions and building better focus windows in my day.
Goals for Next Week
- Find short courses to help me better understand some digital tools including, Canva, Adobe and CAD.
- Continue developing a consistent study schedule using the time management strategies i learned.
- Practice applying a growth mindset when i feel unsure or overwhelmed.
- Finish and submit my first assessment.
My Thoughts and Feelings
I felt a mix of excitement and nerves this week. Returning to study after a very long break, and doing it online, definately made me doubt myself at first but the support resources, our Teams meetings and the MyLearn platform, helped me feel more connected and capable.
The self discovery content made me pause and appreciate this opportunity. I'm not just here to learn design, I'm here to discover my purpose, my passion, grow in confidence, and set an example for my kids. That realisation made everything feel more meaningful.
Kayla, you’re already showing so much self-awareness and determination, and it’s fantastic to see how you’re embracing the challenges of balancing motherhood, study, and new routines. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of nerves and excitement at the beginning, but the way you’re using time management, reflection, and proactive goal-setting really sets you up for success. Keep leaning into that growth mindset and celebrate these wins, big and small. You’re off to a great start!
